Complaints On Animal Shelters Lucerne -Look Before You Leap

Some people have visited shelters and noted certain things that may not be up to par with their expectations.  These may include overpopulation, unsanitary cages, lack of food and water at first glance and sick animals. 

Things to consider

First instinct is to report the case to proper authorities.  Before doing that, however, it is best to look into the situation first.  There might be more to it that meets the eyes.  Here are some certain things which might hold true for certain shelters, as discussed in some tierheime luzern, Switzerland:

• Sick animals—newly-arrived animals are often sick, harbor contagious diseases and in need of vaccinations.  A good shelter learns to identify these things, quarantine, and institute measures to combat the disease.
• Unsanitary cages---this often happens first thing in the morning, when the volunteers haven’t arrived yet to clean and disinfect the place.  Also, it is good to look at the ratio of volunteers to the number of animals.  They might be understaffed.  In this case, it is best to volunteer your service then.

• Lack of water--- Animals have the tendency to step on their water bowls leading to a soaking wet floor.  This might lead to sliding accidents.  Animals are often watered on a regular basis.
• Lack of food---- animals on a free-feed basis often develop diarrhea due to overeating.  Animals are often fed twice a day, but more so for sick or young animals.  Also, some animals may be restricted to eat for a while due to certain tests performed on them or for other medical reasons.
• Mercy killing--- it is a sad fact that not all shelters are equipped with enough volunteers or have enough space to house all animals.  In the case of mercy killing, the shelters already have policies, which is in line with government mandates.
